The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2 — But Why Tho

With Marbus and Westeria forming a contract for their mutual benefit in last week’s episode, the duo now prepares to head out on their journey. But before they can go, Wisteria may need a few items to help her pass in “polite” company. Also, unbeknownst to the pair, Snow is hot on their heels in The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2.

This week’s episode is a packed one. With character development, plot progression, and setup for future narrative beats, The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2 does a lot of work while managing to never feel rushed. This is an impressive balancing act that bodes well for the future of the series. And as one might expect, all this work is centered firmly on its starring duo.

The bulk of this episode revolves around Marbas and Wisteria’s preparations for their journey. Through their excursions to get some proper attire for Wisteria, along with a bite to eat, the show weaves in a lot of new elements to their story. New characters are introduced who bring both personality and hints of future plots with them, as well as a realization for Marbas.

That realization is just how much Wisteria is going to be depending on him now that she has traded her sight for their contract. The show does a great job of highlighting how Marbas hadn’t thought about what daily life would be like when their deal was struck. While there are some bumps in the road, I’m confident he’s up for the greater levels of responsibility than he’d anticipated.

The biggest moment in The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2 comes in the back half of the story when Snow catches up with Marbas. To be honest, I did not see this meeting taking place already. With the speed it seemed Wisteria and Marbas were preparing to leave, I figured Snow would remain one step behind them, probably staying there for the bulk of, if not the entire, season. However, I’m happy with the choice to see this confrontation play out this early in the series. It allows the show to develop with a lot more possibility ahead of it, instead of tying down a portion of each episode to Snow’s pursuit, as well as giving this episode a chance to show off some visual elements during the pair’s fight.

Along with bringing the episode’s most appealing visual components and driving the narrative forward, The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2 big finale also does a lot of emotional development as well. Unsurprisingly, Snow and Marbas’s confrontation forces Wisteria into an emotional corner. How the show handles the characters, how they grow, and what final choices they make all feel natural and fluid, even though a lot of ground gets covered in a short period.

The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2 came out swinging and managed to land all its punches. The episode moved at a great pace and introduced intriguing elements, all while developing both characters and the plot skillfully.

The Tale of Outcasts Episode 2 is streaming on Crunchyroll.
