Andy (Yûichi Nakamura) and Fuko (Kahara Moe) are so much closer to their goal in Undead Unluck Episode 4, “Do You Love the Change in Me?” as they come face to face with Gena. Their place in the Union is at stake, but will they be able to emerge victorious?

Gena is one of the Union members who sits at the Roundtable, and Andy and Fuko must kill her if they want to take her spot. There were some touching character moments between Fuko and Gena in the last episode that gave way to Gena’s reveal as the person they were hunting the whole time. In Unluck Episode 4, Gena uses her past with Andy as a tool for her defense.

The relationship between Andy and Gena is an interesting one since it was Gena who first captured Andy 50 years before the events currently taking place. Her ability allows her to stay looking eternally 16, and she gives off a very childish vibe more often than not. Her infatuation with Andy, whom she calls Deady Dearest, is sometimes uncomfortable and entirely one-sided. Andy has always seemed a few crayons short of a full box, so it makes sense that he does not really register Gena’s attraction to him.

See, Andy simply likes to fight and find cool ways to die. It is this approach that causes him to miss social cues that other characters find obvious. It is what makes his comedy work, but there are still brief glimpses beneath the surface that there is more than meets the eye with this lovable idiot. Andy cares about Fuko. That much is clear, but it is still not obvious if he cares about her as a person or just cares about what she can do for him. That relationship is continuing to unravel and is the heart hidden beneath the comedy and action moments of Undead Unluck Episode 4.

Undead Unluck Episode 4 - But Why Tho(1)

Speaking of action, there is plenty of great fighting between Andy and Gena in Undead Unluck Episode 4. Andy is slowly figuring out how Gena’s powers work and puts them to the test. The fact that he can’t die allows him to try all sorts of risky moves that would kill anyone else. It is quite fun to watch him dive headfirst into danger and come out of it having learned so much more. He also has to protect Fuko the entire time, adding an extra layer to the fighting.

Andy also continues to uncover new ways to fight that really showcase how great David Production is at bringing this series to life on screen. The fighting in Undead Unluck Episode 4 is some of the best of the series so far, and that is mainly due to the incredible animation quality. Seeing Andy in motion is often breathtaking as he destroys and rebuilds his body to unlock new ways of traversing the battlefield. It is simultaneously extremely over-the-top and yet done so well that it almost feels normal. It’s such an impressive display of animation quality and direction that these epic action moments translate so perfectly to the small screen.

Undead Unluck Episode 4 is an epic display of incredible action as Andy and Fuko continue their adventure together. There are so many heart-stopping, breathtaking moments that highlight just how great this series is and how it can get even better going forward. Seeing the relationship between Andy and Fuko grow in the midst of battle makes it impossible not to root for this lovable duo.

Undead Unluck is streaming now on Hulu.
