Of all the characters in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho, Hiei, played by Kanata Hongō, may have the most eyes on him, no pun intended. Hiei stands as a captivating enigma, challenging the traditional archetype of a shonen protagonist. Unlike his counterparts, Hiei’s introduction is steeped in darkness, his actions tinged with an unsettling bloodlust that sets him apart. Born of a forbidden union and rejected by his kind, Hiei’s origins are shrouded in mystery and pain.

Yu Yu Hakusho is chock-full of characters who break the traditional mold of what is to be a shonen protagonist. Like Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Kurama, Hiei wasn’t always the hero. However, Hiei’s actions are a bit darker, making peeling back the layers to find the hero within more challenging. Even in his introduction, Hiei has a certain amount of bloodlust, making his transition to hero take a different path than his counterparts.

Hiei’s origin story is shrouded in darkness, mirroring the mysterious nature of his character. Born to a forbidden union between an Ice Maiden and a Fire Demon, Hiei faced rejection and hostility from his kind. Hiei’s life took a dark turn when he was cast away by his mother in fear that he would be the eventual destruction of their community. In his exile, he would be raised by a band of thieves, where Hiei honed his skills and developed a fierce determination to rise above his circumstances before moving on to grander aspirations.

Undergoing a painful Jagan Eye implant by Shigure, a demon doctor, Hiei sought revenge on the ice village that rejected him. With the power of the Jagan Eye, Hiei can control the minds of humans and demons. However, upon reaching the Glacial Village, he spared the ice demons, feeling they weren’t truly alive because of their cold hearts. Further, Hiei discovered he had a twin sister, Yukina, who had left the village years ago.

Hiei decided to use the Jagan Eye to watch over Yukina, paying Shigure for his teachings and swearing never to reveal to Yukina that he was her brother. His journey to find Yukina led him to the Human World, where he encountered fellow demon Kurama. This meeting temporarily interrupted his quest, involving him, Kurama, and Gouki stealing weapons from the Spirit World’s artifact vault, becoming the targets of Yusuke Urameshi’s first case. Little did Hiei know that meeting Yusuke would change his trajectory forever, putting him on a path to go from villain to member of the heroic Team Urameshi.

Bonds Forged in Fire

Hiei But Why Tho 2

At the outset of the series, Hiei’s relationship with Yusuke Urameshi, the protagonist, is marked by animosity and conflict. Hiei is introduced as an antagonist, a powerful demon with his motives and disdain for humanity. Unlike Yusuke’s and Kurama’s relationship, Hiei and Yusuke fought in highly contested matches multiple times. However, as circumstances force them to unite in the Dark Tournament Arc, a reluctant brotherhood begins to form. Through intense battles and shared challenges, Hiei’s loyalty to Yusuke deepens, transcending their initial adversarial dynamic and setting the stage for a pivotal alliance within Team Urameshi.

Hiei’s connection with Kurama, another member of Team Urameshi, is characterized by a unique blend of rivalry and mutual respect. Both demons share a common understanding of the complexities of their demonic nature. The dynamics between Hiei and Kurama evolve as they face formidable adversaries together, forging a bond based on trust and an unspoken acknowledgment of each other’s strengths. Kurama’s cunning intellect complements Hiei’s fierce combat abilities, creating a synergy that contributes significantly to the team’s success.

The relationship between Hiei and Kazuma Kuwabara, the human with a strong spiritual sense, is initially laced with disdain. Kuwabara’s unwavering sense of justice and eagerness to protect his friends contrast with Hiei’s stoic and solitary nature. However, as the series unfolds, a subtle camaraderie develops between them. Kuwabara’s sincerity and determination elicit an unexpected protective instinct in Hiei, showcasing a depth to their relationship that transcends initial impressions. All of this is made more complex by Kuwabara’s feelings for his sister Yukina.

The revelation of Yukina as Hiei’s twin sister introduces a complex layer to Hiei’s character. Despite being separated for much of their lives, the sibling connection remains a powerful and silent force. Hiei’s decision to use the Jagan Eye to watch over Yukina rather than pursue personal vendettas reflects the underlying familial ties that influence his actions. The emotional weight of their relationship adds a touch of vulnerability to Hiei’s character, showcasing a more compassionate side beneath the demon exterior.

Hiei’s relationship with Shigure, the demon chiropractor and surgeon who implants the Jagan Eye, introduces an intriguing mentor-student dynamic. The exchange of Hiei’s life story for the mystical surgery sets the stage for a bond built on mutual benefit. Shigure’s lessons in swordsmanship become pivotal in Hiei’s survival, highlighting the significance of this unique mentorship in shaping Hiei’s abilities and worldview.

Participating in the Dark Tournament presents Hiei with not only physical battles but also an opportunity for redemption. His willingness to join Team Urameshi and fight alongside former adversaries marks a significant challenge to his solitary nature. The camaraderie forged during the tournament becomes a catalyst for Hiei’s transformation, challenging him to redefine his place in a world where alliances are formed and enemies become allies.

Hiei’s relationships in Yu Yu Hakusho are a testament to the series’ ability to weave intricate narratives that transcend mere battles. From the brotherhood forged with Yusuke to the silent influence of a sister and the mentorship of Shigure, each relationship adds layers to Hiei’s character, showcasing the complexity of emotions and connections in a world where demons and humans collide.

Demonic Abilities

Hiei

Hiei is renowned for his extraordinary speed and agility, making him one of the fastest characters in the Yu Yu Hakusho franchise. His movements are a mesmerizing dance, a blur of swift strikes and evasive maneuvers that confound opponents. This extraordinary agility allows Hiei to outmaneuver adversaries and strike with deadly precision, reinforcing his reputation as a fearsome combatant.

Further, as a demon of considerable power, Hiei possesses the ability to undergo various demonic transformations. These transformations amplify his strength and augment his capabilities, turning him into an even more formidable force on the battlefield. The unpredictability and versatility afforded by these transformations make Hiei a dynamic and unpredictable adversary, capable of adapting to diverse challenges.

At the heart of Hiei’s abilities lies the Jagan Eye, a mysterious third eye on his forehead that grants him a variety of extraordinary powers. With telepathy, telekinesis, and mind control at his disposal, the Jagan Eye symbolizes Hiei’s strength and a reminder of his tumultuous past. This eye sets him apart from other demons and serves as a potent tool in battles, allowing him to outmaneuver opponents physically and mentally.

Perhaps one of the most iconic and devastating techniques in Hiei’s arsenal is the Dragon of the Darkness Flame. This technique involves summoning a black dragon from the depths of the Demon World, unleashing a torrent of destructive energy upon his foes. The sheer power and intensity of the Dragon of the Darkness Flame make it a force to be reckoned with, capable of overwhelming even the most formidable adversaries. Its dark and imposing nature reflects Hiei’s inner turmoil and the formidable depths of his demonic powers.

Hiei is not merely a master of supernatural abilities but also a formidable swordsman. Armed with the Sword of the Darkness Flame, a weapon infused with his demonic energy, Hiei’s swordsmanship is a mesmerizing dance of lethal strikes and precise movements. The integration of swordplay into his combat style adds a layer of complexity to Hiei’s skills, allowing him to seamlessly transition between physical and supernatural forms of combat.

Hiei’s evolution from a solitary outcast to an integral member of Team Urameshi leaves an indelible mark on Yu Yu Hakusho. His journey, fraught with rejection, revenge, and unexpected connections, resonates as a testament to the nuanced storytelling within the anime. The enigma of Hiei lies not just in his formidable demonic abilities or his prowess in battle but in the layers of emotion, redemption, and loyalty that define his relationships. Hiei’s relationships, forged in the crucible of battles and shared challenges, showcase the depth of his character.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
