Fans of The Case of the Golden Idol (ourselves included) have some new news to celebrate. During The Game Awards, Playstack and Color Gray revealed The Rise of the Golden Idol, a fully-fledged sequel to the beloved 2022 indie hit The Case of the Golden Idol. Our reviewer gave Golden Idol Mysteries: The Spider of Lanka”  a 9/10 and said “The Spider of Lanka builds off an already amazing base game to give players a deeper look at such an intriguing world. It is full of political intrigue, shady characters, and countless mysteries waiting to be uncovered. While I might have liked to see a few more cases, that is only because what was presented was just that good.”

With an enigmatic trailer filled with hints at the sequel’s wider story and some riddles of its own, The Rise of the Golden Idol has officially been announced for PC, consoles, and for the first time, on mobile through the Netflix app. The detective game, which, like its predecessor, allows players to investigate scenes freely and build their motives, will be released worldwide digitally in 2024.

Three centuries following the unspeakable fate of the Cloudsleys in The Case of the Golden Idol, the legend of the eponymous relic has all but faded. Now, it is carried only in small whispers, uttered as an obscene myth. Some are determined for this to change. The Rise of the Golden Idol follows a tenacious relic hunter on a quest to unearth the powerful artifact that – if the legend is true – can reshape the world.

As the observer, you must investigate 15 strange cases of crime, death, and depravity. Like before with The Case of the Golden Idol, you are free to investigate however you wish and build your theory. You must make sense of a grand mystery that unravels across an age of hallucinogens, fax machines, parapsychology, and TV guides.

Enlightenment seekers, convicts, chat show hosts, and corporate middle management will all have a role to play in the wider mysteries that unfold. Like always, many of these subjects will have their motives. Some will be carrying more than agendas.

Players unfamiliar with the franchise can play the first three scenarios of The Case of the Golden Idol for free in their web browser here.

You can now wishlist The Rise of the Golden Idol on Steam.
