Day of the Devs is now a fully independent 501c3 non-profit. With that news, it’s launching its first fundraising campaign on FundraiseUP to support its efforts in spotlighting unique and magical video games and the developers who make them – all completely free, with no costs to either developers or event attendees. The news comes amid a brutal year for video game developers as mass layoffs continue to make the industry a difficult career choice.

As a non-profit, made possible through a fiscal sponsorship partnership with Legacy Global, Day of the Devs will make fundraising efforts more transparent and public, help sponsors and the community understand how critical their support is, and solidify the commitment to being 100% platform agnostic. The funds raised by Day of the Devs will support venue fees, equipment, staffing, video production, and overall operating costs.

Fans who choose to donate can receive a variety of gifts, including game keys from developers and publishers: Double Fine Productions, iam8Bit, Enhance, Night School Studio, Capybara Games, Sabotage Studio, Tribute Games, and more, PLUS VIP tickets to events and physical goods.

“It’s a whole new day for Day of the Devs,” said Tim Schafer, co-founder of Day of the Devs. “It’s extremely gratifying to see this show become as fully independent as the amazing indie games it has always centered around.”

Day of the Devs has a new summary as well:

Day of the Devs is a non-profit with the mission to celebrate the creativity, diversity and magic of video games. Day of the Devs gives a voice to emerging or underrepresented talent with platforms that connect players with developers and their games. Day of the Devs takes on the form of virtual and physical events – all completely free, with no costs to either developers or attendees. Over the last 12 years, Day of the Devs has shined a spotlight on many hundreds of games, hosted tens of thousands of people at in-person events, and reached out to millions of viewers through virtual showcases.

In addition to the Day of the Devs non-profit news, they also announced their initial calendar for 2024:

  • Day of the Devs: San Francisco: Sunday, March 17 at The Midway
  • Day of the Devs: Summer Game Fest Edition: June
  • Day of the Devs: The Game Awards Edition: December.

While there isn’t much information on the events later in the year, March’s event from the new Day of the Devs non-profit has a lot of details. In addition to the in-person session listed above, Submissions for developers are now open here and more details on the event itself can be found on the eventbrite page here.  Additionally, Day of the Devs will have special events throughout March.

On Monday, March 18th, fans can check out the Day of the Devs Showcase: SFMOMA Edition. This will be a ticketed event for fans, and more details can be found on the Eventbrite page here. Those attending GDC will also have the opportunity to check out a separate Day of the Devs: GDC Edition showcase during conference hours.
