‘Look Back’ Anime Film Adaptation Announced

Best known for being the creator of Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s work extends beyond bloody carnage. Fujimoto’s one-shot manga Look Back is getting the anime adaptation treatment, hitting theaters later this year in Japan courtesy of Avex Pictures. Look Back is created, written, and illustrated by Fujimoto and published and localized in English by VIZ Media through the publisher’s VIZ Signature imprint. Amanda Haley translates the one-shot, featuring touch-up art and lettering by Snir Aharon.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Devilman Crybaby, Space Dandy) directs the anime film adaptation. Oshiyama is also credited with handling the screenplay and character design. For fans of Chainsaw Man, Look Back offers a distinct shift in tone and style. Despite the shift it still maintains certain vital features that allow Fujimoto to shine. Despite being only 30 seconds long, the teaser hints at the creator’s distinctive, scrappy energy through a calmer lens. Other works from Fujimoto include serialized Fire Punch and the one-shot manga Goodbye, Eri.

Our critic praised the manga, writing:

“Overall, Look Back is very different than Chainsaw Man, but in some ways it isn’t. This one-shot tackles inferiority, depression, and friendship. It also looks at grief and surviving after it in a nuanced way that is unbelievable given the small page count. To tell a story with the emotional depth in Look Back over such a small number of pages is an accomplishment.”

Later in the year we also named it our best manga of 2022.

What Is Look Back About

The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.

Release Date

Look Back hits theaters June 28, 2024 in Japan.
