With Aisha staying with Rudeus (Yumi Uchiyama) and Norn (Saya Aizawa) moving into the dorms, life seems to be settling down for Rudeus. But when he learns that Norn has shut herself in her room, it elicits a drastic response from Rudeus. Determined to keep Norn from suffering as he did in his previous life, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17, “My Older Brother’s Feelings,” sees the young mage struggle to succeed in helping Norn where his family failed to with him.

When we join Rudeus at the beginning of this week’s episode, he already knows that Norn has shut herself in. Stalking the halls of the school, he heads for her classroom with Linia (Fairouz Ai, Chainsaw Man) and Pursena (Minami Tanaka, Kakaguri Twin) in tow.

Rudeus exudes a low-key fury as he marches towards his destination. He is convinced that someone has done something to hurt Norn. That her self-imposed isolation is born from an external trauma that has been inflicted on her. After all, that’s what happened to him.

While it’s easy for the external observer to see how Rudeus is making some huge assumptions, they are understandable ones. His trauma was so grievous he never fully recovered from it. Even after he was reborn, it took him years to leave his home comfortably. His knee-jerk assumptions feel realistic.

After briefly interrogating Norn’s classmates and teacher, Rudeus learns that it isn’t something as cut and dry as a moment of harassment that has shut her in her room. Rather, a thousand small, stressful moments have built up, causing the girl to flee from her life.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17

They all have a single element in common – Rudeus. Her complicated feelings towards her brother, combined with the unadulterated worship everyone at the school heaps on him, becomes too much for the young girl to process. That he is the source of Norn’s pain is a staggering revelation for Rudeus.

From here, Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17 sees Rudues hatch a plan to reach Norn so he can try to help her. Since she lives in the women’s dorm, he can’t just walk up to the door and knock. However, it seems like, given the circumstances and his role as her current guardian, he’d be able to work something out. The episode uses the roadblock to good effect, regardless of the sensibility of its existence.

Sylphettie gets Princess Ariel to deliver a surprise speech, drawing the bulk of the campus to her. Linia and Pursena then team up to smuggle Rudeus in past the staff still on site in the dorm. It feels a little silly, but it is nonetheless heartwarming to see his wife and friends do what they can to help him out.

Once Rudeus reaches his little sister, his struggle soon becomes twofold. Not only must he find a way to help her, but he quickly finds himself facing flashbacks of himself, trapped in his room all those years ago. The episode does a wonderful job of integrating Rudeus’ memories into the scene.

How he is momentarily assaulted by his past as he struggles to help Norn is a powerful moment. While these interruptions initially feel like a hindrance and distraction to Rudeus, they become the key to his helping Norn out of her predicament.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17

It is through his memories that Rudeus realizes what he can do for his sister. Remembering his brother’s attempts to reach him and how he came up with logical, well-intentioned arguments that meant nothing to him at the time guides his approach to his sister. Rather than bringing similar arguments, Rudeus simply shows her support. While holding back tears, he affirms to her that he is here for her. That he loves her and that he wants to help. Finally, if she wants him there, he’ll keep helping her.

This affirmation of his desire to support her is the crux of Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17‘s emotional story. Seeing Rudeus present himself passively, making himself available for her, IF she wants him there, breaks the image of him she has struggled with since their first meeting. The brutish older brother she thought she had would never be able to so gently present his support.

Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17 takes Norn and the viewer through a series of flashbacks that show how Norn’s father and others have tried to explain these elements of her brother to her. It is only now, with them finally displayed to her, that she sees that he cares about her. The realization leads to a tearful embrace between the two.

While the moments that compile this episode’s struggles are excellently done, there is one element that feels undercut. That is time. As the episode wraps up, we see Norn already out and about, seemingly fully recovered from her recent distress. Such trauma rarely simply vanishes, and getting a feeling for Norn’s recovery taking more than a single tear-soaked hug to overcome would’ve been nice. Healing is a process, not an event.

Despite that small observation, Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Episode 17 delivers what is an all-around stellar entry. It explores the power of helping through acceptance rather than intervention. Allowing Rudeus to grow past his old struggles by seeing them through the lens of Norn further utilizes the story’s events, making them all the more impactful.
