The ‘Diablo Immortal’ x ‘World Of Warcraft’ Collab “Eternal War” Is A Taste Of Azeroth

Thirty years is a long time for any series to exist. Even more so if they have had a near-constant presence during those thirty years. Two series with a similar long lifespan from one company are equally impressive. And in 2024, Blizzard seems to be pulling all of the stops for Warcraft, with collab events in its other ongoing games to celebrate. Warcraft skins in Overwatch 2, unique skins in Diablo IV, and now a special event in Diablo Immortal. We got to check out the Eternal War event that brings Azeroth’s heroes and villains to Sanctuary.

So, what is involved in this event? On its face, it definitely has gone above and beyond many other tie-in events for a Blizzard cross-franchise event. Beyond the surprising amount of cosmetics added, the coolest aspects of this event are the World of Warcraft-themed raid in the Frozen Citadel and a PVP event inspired by the classic Arathi Basin battleground.

As someone who has played a lot of Diablo II, III, and IV but very little of Diablo Immortal, it was cool to see initially just how fun the game is and how well Diablo plays on my iPhone. But even cooler is seeing the Frozen Citadel, a boiled-down version of Wrath of the Lich King‘s Icecrown Citadel in a Diablo-style format. It’s full of classic scourge enemies, like ghouls and abominations, while you clear a hallway to reach the Lich King.

The Lich King itself fits shockingly well as a Diablo boss. Mechanics from the original raid encounter are adapted to fit the Action RPG gameplay, like the ground-covering Defile and the arena-filling Remorseless Winter that you can avoid by hiding behind ice pillars.

Diablo Immortal Eternal War

This dungeon is very quick, though. Depending on your skill and gear, you could clear the entire Frozen Citadel in minutes. This isn’t a bad thing, but with how long some other dungeons are in other Diablo releases, it’d be nice to see more depth to bring one of the most renowned WoW raids to Sanctuary with some additional bosses included.

Regardless of its length, the rewards you get are beautifully designed weapons from WoW. Did somebody say Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker? What about Remornia, the new weapon waifu wielded by Sire Denathrius during Shadowlands? There are so many more iconic weapons and armor to gain through the new Eternal War battle pass-esque rewards. On top of that, there is a fantastically designed premium Illidan cosmetic for transmogrification.

Ultimately, the Eternal War event is a nice mix of end-game Diablo Immortal and quick WoW content that you can find in current retail for quick, awesome Warcraft rewards. Do a bit here and there, and feel like you’re progressing. However, it does feel pretty simple that this event feels more for Diablo Immortal fans who enjoy WoW rather than ways for Warcraft fans to expand their palette to other Blizzard properties.

In other words, I don’t see myself playing too much more of this once I get my fill of nuking the Lich King for a couple of days to get my hands on Thunderfury. Yet, if you’re a Diablo Immortal fan, this is still a fun event that brings something new, which is all you can ask for with a major celebration event.

Diablo Immortal Eternal War Warcraft event is available now.
