Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for cour two/manga chapters 37-76.

With love in the air, the first cour of Blue Box wrapped with the increasingly complex dynamic between Taiki, Chinatsu, and Hina firmly established. As Blue Box Cour 2 heads into its sophomore year, many emotional twists are in store for the kids of Eimei High as they navigate the tricky waters of love and sports. Let’s take a look and see what fans can expect.

Early on, fans can look forward to a new focus for an episode or two as the story will follow Haryu’s performance at Nationals. Taiki tags along to support the upperclassman and cheers him on alongside Haryu’s girlfriend, Karen. This allows the series to deliver some tense athletic competition as it showcases Haryu’s performance while also exploring Taiki’s concerns about whether or not pursuing Chinatsu would be an unnecessary distraction for both of them.

Since Haryu focuses on badminton and Karen has an acting career, the couple finds themselves in a similar position as Taiki and Chinatsu. Karen dives into how she and Haryu have made sharing their time and passions work. This knowledge helps Taiki see how an active pursuit of Chinatsu wouldn’t have to be detrimental to their athletic endeavors.

It’s all about confidence for Cour 2.

Blue Box Season 2

While this Blue Box Cour 2 opening situation helps build Taiki’s confidence in pursuing Chinatsu, it’s also great for letting fans get to know Karen. We see her shine in a “big sister” role as she nudges Taiki towards his goal. Easily reading that Taiki likes Chinatsu, she pokes at the underclassman, clearly hoping he’ll get up the guts to make a move. As a long-time friend of Chinatsu, Karen’s enthusiasm for the duo’s relationship potential is warm and encouraging.

Cour two’s central focus is Hina’s emotions towards Taiki. Early in the Cour, while Chinatsu is off at Nationals, she confesses she’s in love with Taiki. She doesn’t ask for an answer, wanting to let him think about it, hoping the idea will grow on him. But this leaves their relationship up in the air. The situation comes to a head when the school’s cultural festival comes around.

With their class set to perform Sleeping Beauty, the student slated to play the prince calls out sick, forcing Taiki to take on the role opposite Hina in the lead. A mishap during the performance leaves the audience, Chinatsu included, unsure whether or not Taiki kisses Hina for real in the climactic scene.

Blue Box Cour 2 is about to get awkward – in a good way.

Blue Box Season 2

If the anime manages to capture the feelings and intentions of the characters as the manga did, this cour will explore all the awkward emotional struggles that Hina’s confession brings with delicacy and nuance. Taiki’s intentions towards Hina and Chinatsu and his desire to respect their feelings showcase the character’s emotional maturity. And while there is an elevated sense of drama as all this plays out, the series shouldn’t push things too hard, never going so far as to be melodramatic about the situation.

While Hina takes center stage for much of Blue Blox Cour 2, other side plots should play out along the way. Chinatsu’s mom returns to Japan for a while to care for Chinatsu’s grandmother, causing her daughter to live with her for a while. Both Chinatsu and Taiki feel this change in routine. However, the biggest moment for these two comes when a day trip gets extended due to a train failure, forcing them to stay at a hotel together, putting the duo into an even closer space with each other than they are used to.

All these plot beats promise more of the charm, sweetness, and character exploration for Blue Box Cour 2 that fans of cour one have been experiencing since Taiki and Chinatsu first stepped onto their TV screens. Seeing some of the manga’s most important beats brought to life in the source material’s faithful visual style that Telecom Animation Film has created for the series should only make these moments shine even brighter.

These are the biggest beats fans can expect from Blue Box Cour 2. Are you excited to follow along as Taiki, Chinatsu, Hina, and their friends continue to grow and learn?

Blue Box Cour 1 is streaming now on Netflix.
