We’ve got some fun new developments from Wizards of the Coast to round out the day, with exciting new visuals, some first look footage, and more coming out of their Magic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm announcement.

The set marks a return to one of Magic: The Gathering’s most popular planes, which players last visited with 2015’s Dragons of Tarkir set. As the old saying goes, dragons make everything better – especially when they’re very, very far away.

The Tarkir: Dragonstorm announcements highlights include:
  • An overview of new mechanics and each of the five clans, with unique key words that adjusts gameplay themed to each clan
  • Five Commander Decks, one themed to each clan
  • For collectors, new print treatments like Ghostfire Halo Foil, and Dragon’s Eye Basic Lands appearing in collector boosters
  • Most importantly, preorders for the set, which releases April 11, 2025, are now available from local game stores and online retailers.

Now, let’s get into the nitty gritty details of everything involving the brand-new Tarkir set.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm – Official Trailer | Magic: The Gathering

As powerful dragonstorms spiral Tarkir into chaos and wild dragons darken the skies, the five clans fight alongside their new Spirit Dragons for supremacy. Join your clan. Break the storm.

The story behind Magic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm

The skies above Tarkir are deadlier than ever as unrest turns into full-scale warfare. Magic: The Gathering Tarkir: Dragonstorm marks the long-awaited return to the iconic dragon-filled plane, where players will rally against opposing clans, collect powerful artifacts, and battle with – and against – the legendary dragons of Tarkir.

The plane of Tarkir is now bigger and bolder than ever, filled with cinematic martial arts action, dynamic clan gameplay, and powerful new dragons that add lasting firepower to players’ Magic: The Gathering collections. Tarkir: Dragonstorm follows from the events of Dragons of Tarkir where people were subjugated under the oppressive rule of the dragonlords.

Over time unrest grew and the people rebelled against dragonlords, taking up the banners of the old clans. In a bid to end the conflict, the leaders of the rebellion uncovered a powerful ritual, one that would summon a force strong enough to defeat the dragonlords once and for all. With five distinct clans to choose from, players will confront these terrifying dragonstorms and battle for survival and power.

Here are some fun set highlights:

New Mechanics – Emblaze your decks with a flight of new Dragon cards and bring destruction from above with two brand new dragon-themed abilities:

  • Dragonstorms are enchantments with powerful enter abilities that you return to your hand for recasting when you play a Dragon.
  • Omen is a new card subtype that lets you choose whether to cast a small spell that then shuffles into your library, or a big Dragon. Talk about an imposing presence!

Battle Alongside Your Clan – The five clans of Tarkir are back, each with their own vibrant culture and immersive gameplay. Find your clan and join the fight with a playstyle that fits you, including a new keyword for each clan:

  • Endure, the Abzan (White, Black, Green) keyword focuses on counters. When playing creatures with Endure players may add N +1/+1 counters or create N/N Spirit tokens.
  • Flurry, the Jeskai (Blue, Red, White) keyword allows for mini combo turns with multiple spells. Cards with Flurry trigger an additional effect when you cast your second spell each turn.
  • Renew, the Sultai (Black, Blue, Green) keyword allows players to exile cards from their graveyard as a sorcery for fun and profit. To Renew, spend some mana and exile the card for a powerful result.
  • Mobilize, the Mardu (Red, White, Black) keyword aims to boost a go-wide strategy for the turn. Creatures with Mobilize trigger when attacking and create more attackers with menace that are sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step.
  • Harmonize, the Temur (Green, Blue, Red) keyword is all about big creatures reducing costs. You may cast a card with Harmonize from your graveyard for its Harmonize cost and may tap an untapped creature you control to pay its power in generic mana.

Each clan’s unique three color gameplay and new abilities offer fresh strategies to wield as you fight for survival. Choose your clan and prepare for battle with five new Commander decks, each featuring a legendary clan leader of Tarkir and a Spirit Dragon. Each deck is ready to play right out of the box and contains everything you need to play Magic’s most popular multiplayer format.

Collect them all! The cards that is…

Tarkir: Dragonstorm features a trove of relics for your clan to claim with coveted cards, new card treatments, and thematic foils that bring Tarkir to life. The pride of Tarkir’s treasures is Mox Jasper, a powerful addition to any dragon deck. Regular and Draconic treatments can be found in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. The serialized version, limited to 500, features exclusive Dan Frazier artwork and Retro frame, and can only be found in Collector Boosters.

Tarkir has a rich history, and the latest set features a range of showcase treatments that honor the legacy of the clans and dragons. The Dragonic cards celebrate the wild dragons of the plane with a themed frame, while the Borderless Clans cards bring the five factions to life with a unified theme. The elder dragon Ugin’s influence over Tarkir is manifest in new Ghostfire cards, special art and card frames imbued with Ugin’s ethereal presence.

Deadly dragons can also have a cute side. There are six new Borderless Reversible cards each featuring a fearsome and adorable version of your favorite winged creatures.

Fetch lands are back in the Special Guest slot! Pull powerful enemy fetch lands for your favorite decks, with a Tarkir twist. New textured Dragonscale Foil fetch lands bring an immersive visual and tactile experience to the storied landscapes of the plane. These are exclusive to Collector Boosters.

The presence of dragons can be felt across Tarkir, their approach heralded by ominous shadows depicted in Full-Art Basic Lands that show the scale of these wild creatures. Tarkir: Dragonstorm offers a second treatment of Full-Art Basic Lands, offering a close and personal look at the plane’s dragons. Count yourself either very lucky, or unlucky, to stare into these eyes!

Magic: The Gathering: Tarkir: Dragonstorm includes Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Prerelease Packs, and Bundles.
